Our Spring 2020 edition of our magazine with Scottish Natural Heritage focused on natural solutions to the environmental crises we are currently facing, namely climate change and biodiversity loss. This lesson plan draws on the articles contained within this magazine, covering topics such as species extinction and grouse moor management. Suitable for Levels 3-4.


Sustainable Transport in Scotland

The Winter 2019 edition of our magazine focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly with reference to Scotland. Based on this edition, this lesson plan focuses on SDG9 industry, innovation and infrastructure, specifically transport. Suitable for Levels 2-4.


Sri Lanka

The Summer 2019 edition of our magazine focused on outer space, but included a picture article about Sri Lanka following the tragic bombings that took place on the island. Together with Education Scotland, we produced a lesson plan to accompany this topical article. Suitable for Level 3.


Stop the Plastic Tide

The Spring 2018 edition of our magazine, The Geographer, had a theme of transformational change. One of the articles focused on plastic pollution in our seas and oceans, particularly in Scotland. Discovering Oman

The RSGS has been working with Outward Bound Oman to offer opportunities for cross-cultural learning by young people. These lesson plans, which compare Oman and the UK in a whole range of geographical themes, have been created by practising geography teachers from the UK and Oman. Suitable for Level 3.


Lessons in Resilience

In collaboration with Outward Bound Oman, these interactive lessons focus on resilience and follow a team of three explorers trying to recreate a journey that had not been done for 85 years, across the Empty Quarter, the biggest sand desert on earth. Flexible age-wise, these plans and can be used in a variety of ways: from stimulating discussion amongst outdoor education students at university, to inspiring young people about the value of learning outdoors. Suitable for Level 2 upwards.
